Horror moment Russian sunbathers struck by deadly shrapnel raining down on Crimean beach

Russian sunbathers filmed the horror moment deadly shrapnel rained down on a beach in Crimea.

The shocking scene was captured during a Ukranian missile strike against the Russian-occupied peninsula. At least five people, including three children, died from shrapnel wounds and hundreds were injured, as Russian officials warned the death toll will rise.

The shrapnel rained down on the beach after Russia’s air defence systems intercepted one of the missiles fired by Ukraine.

Screaming tourists can be heard telling others to “run” as shrapnel rains down on the beach and the sea in loud terrifying thuds.

One video shot by a tourist shows a missile coming into view in the sky and then exploding. Later videos from the beach showed tourists using sun loungers as makeshift stretchers to carry injured people off the sand. Women in bikinis are also seen in the clips administering first aid to an injured tourist as his blood drips onto the sand.

Eyewitness Irina Frolova told the Izvestia newspaper she heard the terrified screams from a pool at a nearby hotel.

The young mother, who works as a medic, ran down to help: “There were a lot of wounded people there and by the time I arrived, they had already been taken off the beach to the parking lot. I had eight wounded people.

“There were mostly shrapnel wounds, a woman was hit in the neck by a double shrapnel. She died.”

The beaches just outside Sevastopol, the biggest city in Crimea, were packed with young families at the start of the holiday season. Russia’s health ministry confirmed that at least 124 people had been left injured in the attack, including 27 children.

The beach was part of a holiday resort near the city, which is also home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. The resort is also around 10 minutes from the Belbek airfield, which Russia uses to launch fighter jets that regularly target civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

Russia has blamed the US for the attack after Ukraine used five US-made ATACMS long-range artillery rockets.

Moscow said that the intercepted missile had been armed with a cluster munition warhead that exploded over the beach.

Russia has promised a response to the incident, saying: “Responsibility for the deliberate missile attack on civilians in Sevastopol lies primarily with Washington, which supplied these weapons to Ukraine, as well as the Kyiv regime.

“Such actions will not go unanswered.”

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said that Russian president Vladimir Putin had been informed of the attack and was in “constant contact” with his senior military, emergency and healthcare staff.

Despite the Russian outrage at the loss of civilian life, Ukraine has refused to let up on its attacks on Crimea. Overnight, Kyiv launched another eight ATACMS rockets at the Russian-occupied peninsula. The US-made missiles, which have recently arrived in Ukraine, can hit targets 300 km away

The beach incident could spark concerns in the US amid a debate over whether to relax rules on whether Ukraine can use its US-made missiles to hit Russian territory.
