Home expert shares 10 '30 second' hacks to keep warm as temperatures plummet

If you’re seeking ways to stay warm as temperatures drop without cranking up the heating, a home expert has shared 10 tips you can try.

With temperatures hovering around zero degrees in parts of the UK and often dipping below freezing, it’s crucial to stay snug and warm. While layering up with an extra jumper may provide temporary relief, once your body adjusts, you’ll need additional measures to maintain warmth.

TikTok user @thatpropertyguy revealed 10 quick hacks for when it’s “a bit chilly” outside, each taking just 30 seconds to implement.

Firstly, he suggested “bleeding your radiators to make them run efficiently” and enhancing their performance by using “reflector foil to reflect heat back into the room.”

According to You Repair, regular radiator bleeding helps eliminate trapped air in the central heating system. If air is present, it reduces space for hot water, preventing the radiator from heating up properly.

He further advised that “if you haven’t already,” it’s vital to use thermostatic valves and automate your thermostat to avoid “you’re not wasting heat throughout the day”.

“Close curtains and blinds to help retain the heat,” he recommended, before suggesting to “move furniture away from radiators to prevent them from absorbing heat,” allowing your room to heat up effectively.

He pressed the importance of home insulation, advising: “if you’re up to it, install some insulation,” and highlighting the need to insulate “walls, pipes, and loft” He further suggested that homeowners can “stop draughts coming in” by “draught proofing around windows and doors”.

For those with hardwood or tile floors, he pointed out that a “rug will keep your feet warm,” emphasizing that they have a practical purpose beyond aesthetics. Additionally, he advised: “Turn your oven off when you’ve finished cooking, but leave the door open” to allow the residual heat to spread through the home.

“And, as a bonus, don’t forget to double up your socks,” he concluded his tips, offering a simple yet effective way to retain warmth.
