An airport in Hawaii was briefly evacuated Tuesday when two hand grenades were found in a man’s carry-on luggage.
After the grenades were picked up during TSA screening at Hilo International Airport around 5:45 a.m., agents cleared the terminal while the Hawaii Police Department bomb squad investigated.
They determined the grenades were inert — unable to explode — and posed no serious threat.
Akito Fukushima, 41, of Kanazawa, Japan, was arrested on a charge of first-degree terroristic threatening.
Police said Fukushima was attempting to board a flight outside the U.S. but did not say what his final destination was. He remains in police custody and the investigation is considered ongoing.
The airport resumed normal operations a little more than an hour after the grenades were discovered.
“Police remind the public that replicas of explosives, such as hand grenades, are prohibited in checked and carry-on baggage,” they added.
TSA agents also have discretion to confiscate any items they deem security risks.
