RIDERS of Harley-Davidson motorcycles are just learning of a useful, little-known feature that can be used even if the bike’s engine is switched off.
The famous brand, known and loved across the US, often incorporates a variety of innovative features into their bikes – many of which riders may not realize are there.

Although the bike’s features are outlined in the owner’s manual, most riders are unlikely to browse through it unless they’re looking for something specific.
The 2024 Road Glide, for example, comes equipped with a convenient accessory mode that lets you interact with the bike’s electronic systems without starting the engine.
Activating this mode is simple enough: just press and hold the key fob’s trip switch. This powers the instruments and accessory circuit while keeping the headlamp and turn signal lamps off.
In accessory mode, the Infotainment Control Unit (IFCU) displays essential information, such as the fuel gauge and odometer – which will allow you to monitor fuel levels and mileage without firing up the engine.
It’s great, for example, if you need to briefly activate the headlamp to check your surroundings.
And, when you’re finished, you can turn the bike off again by pressing and holding the trip switch again.
However, accessory mode is intended for short-term use and leaving the bike in this mode for an extended period can drain the battery.
If the motorcycle remains in accessory mode for two hours, it will automatically shut off to prevent complete battery discharge, but should you still need to use the mode after an automatic shutdown, press and hold the trip switch to resume.
In general, the feature provides a practical way to check critical information and adjust settings, all the while conserving energy.
This comes as a biker recently took a Harley Davidson on a 12,000-mile ride and praised its powerful engine – but singled out a frustrating issue.
The bike’s engine packed a punch, delivering smooth acceleration and a raw, thrilling roar.
The CVO Pan America had powerful acceleration from low to high speeds, while it also slowed down quickly, making it easier to control on rough roads.
The seat was very comfortable, making long rides easy, even a 1,025-mile trip in less than 24 hours.
Visually, the Pan America turned heads. Its aggressive fairing and stance had more of a 1960s muscle car vibe than the bulkier 70s-style adventure bikes.
But not everything about the bike was flawless.
The lack of a standard 12V accessory point annoyed the driver, forcing them to use an adapter or wire gear directly to the battery.
But the most troubling issue was the random drop-out of the fourth gear during hard acceleration.
Harley-Davidson is facing significant challenges in the coming year as the European Union is set to impose $28 billion worth of tariffs on US goods, including motorcycles, starting from April 1.
The iconic brand is likely to see prices rise in Europe, adding to its already significant struggles.
Harley-Davidson closures in 2024
There are over 650 Harley-Davidson dealerships across America.
However, multiple stores have closed for various reasons throughout 2024 – if they give any explanation at all.
Below is a list of some Harley-Davidson locations that have shuttered this year and why they closed their doors:
A San Francisco location closed in June 2024 after 110 years due to ‘chaos’ brought by new management.
Miracle City Harley-Davidson in Titusville, Florida, closed in September 2024 with no reason given.
Harley-Davidson’s legacy location in New York City closed shop on September 28, 2024, with the owner citing problems with the economy.
Reiman’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee, Illinois, closed its doors in October 2024 after the owners sold the business to the Walter Brothers Harley Davidson dealership in Peoria, Illinois.
Another Illinois dealership closed in November 2024.
Plus, the dealership in West Bend, Wisconsin, is temporarily closing for the season from November 2 until April 1, 2024.
In 2025, Hideout Harley-Davidson in Missouri announced it would shutter at the end of March.
