Naturally, hair’s colour, thickness, and strength tend to change with age – all of which are unavoidable.
That said, there are many ways to alter one’s appearance in the later stages of life to conceal everything from grey to thinning strands.
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with showing signs of ageing – it’s an entirely natural part of life’s journey – the right care, along with certain cuts and colours, can help create a more youthful style.
Dana Tate, a hairstylist and makeup artist hailing from the United States, often presents videos on beauty topics through her TikTok page @thedanatate.
In one of these insightful clips, she exposed how several easy-to-make, but prevalent, hair choices could add a whopping “10 years” to your appearance.
Dana said: “Stop doing these things with your hair if you want to look younger”. She highlighted three primary areas of potential mistakes: colour, cut, and styling.
In particular, Dana insisted that if you do colour your hair, it’s critical to ensure it complements your skin tone and complexion, especially crucial for those who prefer darker hues.
The beauty expert elaborated: “Hair colour that’s too dark for you is not doing you any favours,” she cautioned. Instead, you must aim to pinpoint a colour that harmonizes with your natural complexion.”
Dana offered this handy tip to those who are fans of dark hair: “Even if you love dark hair try a few face-rimming highlights to brighten up around your face and make you look at least 10 years younger.”
Regarding current hair trends, she highlighted a key error that many fall into – choosing the wrong style for their fringe. She claimed an adjustment to your fringe alone can make all the difference to your younger-looking appearance.
“Stop wearing super short bangs. It’s a no,” she cautioned. Despite some individuals favouring the daring appeal of super short fringes, it’s worth pondering over which fringe cut suits you best before committing.
A full fringe showcases various lengths, from residing halfway down the forehead to delicately brushing against the brow or even longer. Your personal style profile and facial structure will inevitably influence what’s best for you.
Commenting on her video, Dana highly recommended a “side swept fringe” paired with high or low lights. However, she firmly believes that the only person who should make the final decision is you.
After all, feeling comfortable in your skin and confident in your hairstyle trumps all advice. Nevertheless, for those who rely on hairspray to hold their style, Dana’s words of caution serve as a note of importance.
She stressed: “All of that hairspray giving you a helmet head, it’s also making you look older.”
