Popovich first joined the San Antonio Spurs front office in 1994, becoming the head coach in the 1996-1997 season.
He is the NBA’s all-time winningest coach with 1,422 regular season victories, and won five NBA Finals in the process.
However, he has recently dealt with numerous health scares, keeping him away from his duties as head coach.
Popovich suffered a mild stroke in November which held him out for the remainder of the season.
After that stroke, Popovich will not return to coaching the team.
Instead, he will serve a full-time role as the team’s president of basketball operations, according to ESPN.
