Greece's 'worst seaside town' is full of British tourists and loved the rich and famous

A seaside town in Greece that was branded the “worst” in the country is still a hugely popular spot, including with A-list celebrities. Mykonos is one of Greece’s most popular destinations, welcoming two million visitors to the island every year.

Burt Mykonos Town was found to be the worst Greek seaside town in a survey by Which? Travel. This may come as a surprise given that Mykonos has welcomed some of the world’s wealthiest and most recognisable celebrities, including Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and George Clooney.

The Which? Travel survey found that people found Mykonos Town expensive, with the average hotel room costing £200 a night.

Local businesses also received poor reviews for overcharging tourists. Given Mykonos’ popularity, congestion is another big reason why people struggle to relax there.

Author Chrysiida Dimoulidou, who has a house on the island, told the Telegraph why after living there for 30 years, she now thinks Mykonos has lost its charm.

She said: “It’s no longer the Mykonos I loved – they are building everywhere and it’s losing all its charm,”

DJ John Walker, who’s been visiting Mykonos for the past 25 years, also told the outlet “My only issue now is that they seem to cater more for two or three-night stays, [and people] who have loads of money to spend, and [they’ve] pushed out the people who’ve been going for years – we are no longer a priority.”

While some feel negatively about Mykonos, others have given more positive reviews. Posting on Trip Advisor, one reviewer said Mykonos is “the best Greek Island.”

He added: “I will recommend this island as the last stop in Greece, since this will represent the climax of your vacation, no other island will compare, nor you will have as much fun.”

Another said: “I loved the island of Mykonos! Great food, nice beaches, windmills, churches and beautiful water. I’d go back in a heartbeat!”
