Gemma Atkinson Instagram: 'Had I failed?' Strictly star opens up about baby backlash

Gemma Atkinson, 34, revealed she questioned herself for delivering her daughter, Mia, who she shares with boyfriend Gorka Marquez’s, 28, via Caesarian section last month. The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant addressed the issue in view of her 1.2 million Instagram followers after a woman told her she didn’t experience “proper labour”. Gemma shared a quote on the social media platform reading: “Cut me open. I love my baby so much, that I will do anything to get my baby out of my body alive. “Lay me out, cut me open because I love my baby so much.”

The quote continued: “That is the willingness to lay down your body and risk your life that your child might be born, that your child might live.”

Opening up about the misconceptions about C-sections, the TV and radio personality wrote in the caption: “A lady recently joked with me that I’d had the easy option when it came to having Mia as I didn’t experience, ‘proper labour’ she wasn’t being nasty, she said it in jest and she was actually really lovely, but it did get me thinking when I got home.”

The star went on to admit she wondered if she had “failed” by not delivering her baby herself.

She added: “Had I failed? Had I not done it ‘properly’? After a good chat with myself I came to the conclusion that the only ‘proper’ way to have a baby is the way that’s safest for you and your baby.

“There is nothing easy about having a section. There is nothing easy about a vaginal delivery. They are both tiring, scary, emotionally draining and each have their own recovery process both mentally & physically.

“However you brought your baby into the world was right for you and your baby at that time and that’s what matters.”

The former Emmerdale actress went on to share some advice for fellow mums who have had a C-section.

Gemma concluded: “To any mums who like me, who had to have a section and are feeling a little odd about it (which is normal) the above is for you.”

Fans took to the comments section to share their thoughts about the star’s candid admission.

One person wrote: “I would have given anything for a ‘normal’ delivery, but after 24 hours in labour & with my daughter’s heart rate dropping with each contraction, enough was enough! Nobody had better ever tell me that I had it easy!!”

Another added: “Well said, both of my daughters were born by emergency C-section, it doesn’t matter how they were brought into this world as long as they are safe.”

“It’s major abdominal surgery as I like to remind my three boys who were all born by section,” a third fan agreed.

Gemma’s discussion about her experience with labour comes after she shared her excitement about her other-half Gorka returning home.

The new mum spent some time apart from her professional dancer beau as he travelled to London to be introduced to the celebrity contestants ahead of this year’s series of Strictly.

However, Gorka confirmed he would not be paired up with a star on the BBC show this time around.

Gemma gushed about her boyfriend coming home for the weekend by sharing an adorable video of the two of them on Instagram.

She captioned the post: “Home tonight for the weekend! @gorka_marquez.”
