Gardening expert shares when to prune lavenders for a 'second flush of flowers'

Lavenders are popular in the UK as they are both drought-tolerant and fragrant and produce lovely flowers.

However, while they require little attention day-to-day, they do need regular pruning to keep them in check.

In a short video on YouTube, plant experts @plantvibrations shared the best time to prune lavenders so they produce more flowers.

“If you want to grow the healthiest lavender with the most flowers, you have to prune them twice a year,” they said.

The expert said to do this in the early spring and then again in the summer.

However, the plant expert also shared an alternative time to prune your lavenders – and it’s sooner than you think.

The expert also said you can prune them in their “peak bloom season”. If you are pruning your lavenders at this point, simply cut them back by a third from the top of the foliage.

If you do this early enough, your plant may have the chance to “produce a second flush of flowers” at the end of summer or in early autumn.

When you cut lavenders during the flowering season, you can then use the cuttings as bouquets.

Simply tie up the stems and leave them to dry hanging around areas of your home.

Not only will you have pretty purple flowers all around your home but a pleasant scent too.

The video was inundated with comments from fans who praised the expert’s advice.
