Adam Frost has opened up about a sweet moment he shared with his 27-year-old daughter after they worked on a show garden together.
The much-loved TV horticulturist explained what happened on a new episode of the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Podcast, which aired on September 17th. Adam has four children, Abi-Jade, Jacob, Amber-Lily and Oakley, with his wife, Sulina.
He said the moment occurred after he’d worked on a show garden with two of his children, something he described as “lovely”, having decided to even bring along who he jokingly referred to as the “useless one”.
He explained that the day was very much about “inter-planting” and was pleased when his daughter was “up to her neck in muck” in the garden with him. However, it was the text that he received afterwards that really resonated.
Adam said: “It’s all about inter-planting; it’s not about growing veggies by itself, but the lovely thing is I’ve had my kids with me. My sort of…well, we even brought the useless one.”
He continued: “So the youngest one’s been here, bless him, who’s decided he wants to be a landscaper, which was a bit of a shock coz he didn’t show any interest at all, but the oldest had been planting.
“And what I’m saying it for is – you said about those memories. I know those two, so one’s 27, one’s 17, have got memories. They’ll carry that memory now.
“You know, Abs, my oldest, is literally up to her neck in muck with me, kneeling next to me planting this show garden for seven days. We finished it; she went home; she text me and I get goosebumps now.
“She text me saying, ‘Dad; I didn’t want it to finish’. You know and you go, ‘Wow; that’s special’. That is special, innit? You know and I have got a great photograph of the useless one on top of the roof painting it.”
Adam, who is also known for his award-winning work on the Chelsea Flower Show, revealed that he only does this to him publicly because Adam gets “so much stick”.
The Gardeners’ World star has been passionate about the outdoors since he was young, having joined his grandparents in their greenhouse as a child. However, it would appear that this work sometimes causes problems with his wife.
In an episode of the Mike The Gardener podcast, Adam revealed that he had extended his efforts to his own garden, yet he and his wife have different ideas about how they’d like it to appear.
When asked who the head gardener was, he said: “I try and apply the rules, let’s say I apply the rules 80% of the time.
“But then, all of a sudden, the plantaholic gets in there, and then it goes a little bit wry and he starts planting the other things that he shouldn’t be planting.”
