Game of Thrones season 8: Will Sansa Stark sit on the Iron Throne?

There are many contenders for the Iron Throne with Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) at the top of the list given her dragon blood and heritage. However, she faces competition from Jon Snow (Kit Harington), who is a male heir and therefore stands before Daenerys in the line of succession. Nevertheless, both of these figures could be ousted in favour of Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) in Game of Thrones.

Will Sansa Stark sit on the Iron Throne?

According to the bookmakers, Sansa is one of the favourites to become the queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

The latest bets from aggregator Oddschecker has put Lady Stark the favourite to sit on the Iron Throne and she has been named joint-favourite to become the ruler.

Sansa has been given odds of 2/1 to rule, while Jon has been given an an 11/2 shot of becoming king.

Oddschecker, which collates odds from different bookies, has been a 21.9 percent rise in bets on Sansa in the last 24 hours to rule.

Ali Thrupp from Oddschecker said: “Priced at 2/9 to live, Sansa Stark’s survival chances are looking rosier than plenty of contenders for the Iron Throne.

“She showed her mettle again in last night’s episode and when the dust settles from the imminent Battle of Winterfell, it might just fall to a character away from the front line to rule.”

However, there are some other characters who could be named the king or queen of Westeros including Gendry (Joe Dempsie) at 4/1, Bran Stark or the Three-Eyed Raven (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) at 2/1 and the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) at 18/1.

There have been other suggestions that Bran will be the one to sit on the Iron Throne with data visualisation site Visme giving him a 25 percent chance.

Using figures calculated by bookmaker Bovada Odds shortly before season eight started, it’s also predicted Jon has a 22.2 percent chance.

In third place is Daenerys with a 16.7 percent chance and Sansa with 12.5 percent.

Among the least likely to rule Westeros according to the figures are Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) at 0.7 percent, his sister Yara (Gemma Whelan) and Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer) at 0.8 percent.

Both the figures from Oddschecker and Bovada Odds suggest Daenerys is losing ground in the race for the Iron Throne.

She already felt usurped after episode two – A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – when she learnt Jon was her nephew and had a greater claim to the crown than her.

Meanwhile, Sansa has been growing in popularity among the people of Westeros given her fight for a free North and continuously pushing back against Daenerys.

The rivalry between Sansa and Daenerys also shows how Lady Stark has the love of the people while the Mother of Dragon can only rule with fire and blood.

Although Jon has no desire to sit on the Iron Throne, his chances are looking good and he could, in fact, be the best ruler given he unites the North and South of Westeros with both Stark and Targaryen blood.

The outcome of the Battle of Winterfell is also going to be a determining factor in who could rule the Seven Kingdoms with heavy losses expected from the first fight against the White Walkers.

Game of Thrones season 8 airs on HBO in the US on Sundays 9pm ET and on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK on Mondays at 2am & 9pm BST
