The final season of Game of Thrones premiered on Sunday evening, but just how involved was author George RR Martin? Well, in a new interview the 70-year-old has admitted he’s actually been focused on finishing The Winds of Winter. The last book in A Song of Ice and Fire (A Dance with Dragons) was released eight years ago, and with the series having overtaken his books’ narrative it’s not surprising Martin’s putting nose to the grindstone. Speaking with Hollywood Reporter, he said he’d been kept away from the outside world.
Martin said: “Yeah, I’ve been in isolation.
“My loyal staff — I have a couple of them with me — have chained me to the typewriter.
“They’re making me eat healthy food. It’s horrible!”
No doubt Martin hasn’t literally been chained to his desk, but it sounds like he needs all the help he can get to avoid distractions.
Last year, Martin said he’d been hiding in a remote cabin to finally finish The Winds of Winter.
The Wall Street Journal interviewed him over the phone for his new book, Fire and Blood, the first volume of a 300-year Targaryen history.
The outlet wrote: “George R.R. Martin is in hiding. He’s talking to me from a remote mountain hideaway whose location he refuses to disclose.
“It’s a cabin he visits when he wants to hunker down to finish a book—and he’s hard at work on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth instalment in A Song of Ice and Fire, the fantasy series that spawned HBO’s hugely popular Game of Thrones.”
