Fugitive arrested for alleged role in dismemberment of Toms River, NJ man

Four people have been charged with helping an accused killer cover up his crimes after authorities uncovered garbage bags filled with body parts inside a home in Ocean County, N.J.

The last of the four suspects, Jared Krysiak, was arrested in Marlboro Tuesday night, according to a press release from Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer. He’s being held in Ocean County Jail on charges of hindering apprehension and desecration of human remains in connection with the death of Kerry Rollason.

Authorities discovered the remains of 57-year-old Rollason on Friday, as they investigated a separate murder allegedly carried out by Maxwell Johnston.

Police said Johnston killed 25-year-old Gabriella Caroleo on June 27 in Manchester Township. They managed to track him down just more than a week later, hiding out at Rollason’s home along Ravenwood Drive in Toms River. A hours-long standoff ensued, which ended only after Johnston turned a firearm on himself and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Four other people were in the home at the time, including Krysiak. The prosecutors office said he left the residence amid the standoff along with Danielle Bolstad and Jarred Palumbo, both of whom are also facing charges of hindering apprehension and desecration of human remains.

The fourth suspect, 29-year-old Elizabeth Mascarelli, remained on the scene and was arrested in the wake of the standoff.

Billhimer said Mascarelli helped Johnston elude law enforcement despite knowing that he killed Caroleo. She’s been charged with hindering apprehension, harboring a fugitive, desecration of human remains, weapon offenses and other crimes.

A subsequent search of the Toms River residence turned up evidence indicating a murder had taken place there on or about July 3.

After further investigation, police obtained a search warrant for a different residence in Jackson, where officers found “numerous body parts in black bags along with additional evidence connected to the murder,” including a .22 caliber handgun. The remains were later confirmed to be Rollason.

Authorities now believe Johnston not only killed Caroleo, but Rollason as well. Billhimer said the four other suspects helped to dismember the latter victim and helped Johnston hide the body.

Palumbo was arrested on Saturday and Bolstad was taken into custody the following day.
