Florida Rep. Cory Mills investigated for alleged assault in DC

Republican Florida Rep. Cory Mills is under investigation over an alleged assault that occurred in Washington, D.C., according to police.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department were called around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday to an apartment building on the 1300 block of Maryland Avenue SW “for the report of an assault,” according to an incident report. An “active criminal investigation” into the incident is currently underway, police said in a statement.

While the report made no mention of Mills, MPD spokesperson Tom Lynch confirmed to CNN that the GOP lawmaker is the subject of the probe. He declined to provide further details, but noted that 44-year-old Mills was not arrested and no charges have yet been filed in the case.

Lynch also said it’s standard practice to leave a subject’s name out of an incident report while an investigation is ongoing.

In a statement to NBC News, a spokesperson for Mills said the assault allegations are untrue.

“This week, law enforcement was asked to resolve a private matter at Congressman Mills’ residence,” the statement read. “Congressman Mills vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever, and is confident any investigation will clear this matter quickly.”

The alleged victim, who was not identified, echoed the sentiment, telling NBC that while the encounter was “emotionally charged, there was no physical altercation.”
