A man and a young child were found dead at a South Florida apartment on Thursday in an incident being investigated as a murder-suicide, authorities said.
Police in Hialeah, just east of Miami, received a phone call just before 6 p.m. from a woman saying there were two people dead inside an apartment on West 11th Court and 72nd Street.
Responding officers dispatched to the address were able to confirm that one male, between 30 and 40 years of age, and a young child were found dead inside the apartment — a residential unit at the Lake House apartments, Lt. Eddie Rodriguez told reporters in a press conference late Thursday night.
Police had not identified the victims or their relationship as of Friday morning. But according to the Miami Herald, the victims were a father and his son. The child’s mother reportedly discovered their bodies.
“We are going to treat this as a murder-suicide,” Rodriguez said, adding officers were in the process of interviewing neighbors, family members, and the mother of the child.
Rodriguez didn’t provide any details on a motive or how the two had died. But according to the Herald, a police radio indicated both father and son had been fatally shot.
Some neighbors told local news outlets they heard screaming shortly after the shooting.
“I heard some screams from a lady,” one neighbor told NBC South Florida. “Like, screams of terror, and then I went out and then the police arrived, the rescue and ambulances.”
