Christina Anstead says she has “so much going on right now” — and that’s not an understatement.
The “Flip or Flop” star, who announced in March that she’s expecting a child with her second husband, Ant Anstead (she’s due in September), has been filming three shows simultaneously — including “Christina on the Coast,” her first solo series premiering Thursday (9 p.m.) on HGTV.
In the new series, Anstead, 35, redesigns luxe homes in Southern California and introduces viewers to her new husband, British TV personality Ant Anstead (they married last December) as the couple house-shops in swanky Newport Beach to accommodate their growing family.
In the series, Christina also focuses on selling the house in Yorba Linda in which she lived with her ex-husband, “Flip or Flop” co-star Tarek El Moussa. The couple divorced in January 2018 and have two children — daughter Taylor, 8, and son Jayden, 3.
“I know what I always enjoyed about ‘Flip or Flop’ was the design part, so it just naturally made sense to get more involved in doing makeovers,” says Anstead who, in Thursday’s series premiere, helps an old friend, Cassie, redesign and update her mother’s house (she’s now living there after her mother moved into a retirement village).
“We were filming a few shows at the same time but everyone just loved [the show with Cassie] so we decided to make it the first episode,” Anstead says. “It’s getting to see another side of me, too, since we’ve known each other so long. It’s a whole different dynamic. I don’t think there’s more pressure [because Cassie is a friend]; I definitely wanted her to be happy and love it, and I could tell her exactly what I felt.”
HGTV will stream a digital companion series, “Christina on the Coast: Unfiltered,” which goes behind the scenes of the new series and will be available on hgtv.com and on the network’s YouTube channel.
In addition to “Christina on the Coast,” Anstead says she concurrently filmed new episodes of “Flip or Flop” with El Moussa — the series is likely to return for Season 9 in August — and a special episode about backyard swimming pools as part of “Christina on the Coast” airing July 25.
“I had a lot going on last year, and I thought it would be interesting to show a little bit more of my real life,” she says of “Christina on the Coast.” “And people love seeing real estate and different houses for sale and it’s fun for viewers to get a glimpse into the Newport Beach market, which is quite pricey. It’s fun to see the house-hunting process, and what gets you a house on the water versus inland.”
Anstead says that, at least for now, she’s not focused on spinning off her TV empire into her own branded network à la her former HGTV colleagues Chip and Joanna Gaines (“Fixer Upper”), launching their own cable network next summer that will replace DIY Network.
“I’ve never thought of that,” she says. “I think that’s awesome [for Chip and Joanna] but that’s never been a huge thing for me.
“Right now, I’m hoping that ‘Christina on the Coast’ gets picked up for another season.”
