An attempted carjacking on the George Washington Bridge led to the arrest of a man with a loaded firearm after the fleeing suspect trapped himself in a construction shed, Port Authority police said Tuesday.
The wild robbery attempt began about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday when a car with two men smashed into a woman’s automobile as she headed across the Hudson River span into Manhattan.
The two suspects stopped their damaged car mid-span, jumped out, and ran over to the woman’s car.
They tried to open the doors, but the panicked woman locked them. One of the men was brandishing a firearm as he demanded the woman open the doors, a Port Authority source with knowledge of the case said.
After failing to get inside the car, the cops said the two men ran off. One of the men threw a backpack off the bridge as he ran away, officials said.
The woman was not harmed.
Port Authority police caught up with suspect Frederick Antonio Castillo on the New Jersey side of the span after he accidentally trapped himself inside a construction shed, sources said.
Police recovered a handgun with an extended clip and hollow-point bullets on the bridge that Castillo and his partner discarded, cops said.
Castillo was charged with attempted robbery, possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a high-capacity magazine, and possession of hollow-point ammunition.
His accomplice remained on the loose Tuesday.
