A 23-year-old Greek fitness influencer has died after falling into an Italian ravine while filming content for social media.
Georgian-born Giori “Tzane” Janelidze died Wednesday following a fall from a balcony that lacked railings in the abandoned Calabrian village of Roghudi Vecchio, as announced by fellow social media personality Chris Kogias.
“Good evening, guys. Unfortunately, Tzane is no longer with us. He left us yesterday afternoon on the trip we have made to Italy,” said Kogias, according to a translation from Greek outlet Ethnos. “Please pray with us for his soul to rest in peace.”
Another TikToker noted that Janelidze was filming with four others at the time of the incident, all of whom are OK, Ethnos reported.
Despite the efforts of emergency services, firefighters were unable to revive Janelidze, according to People. The depth of the ravine required helicopters to recover his remains, which were then transported to nearby Saline Joniche, about 27 miles southwest of Roghudi Vecchio. It was there that Janelidze’s body was reportedly given to authorities.
Roghudi Vecchio, which sits at the base of the Aspromonte mountain range, was colonized by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. While people can visit the ghost town, it was declared uninhabited in the 1970s, after deadly floods forced its roughly 1600 residents to leave.
