Family matriarch Ethel Kennedy hospitalized after stroke

Ethel Kennedy, the 96-year-old matriarch of the Kennedy family, has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, her grandson Joe Kennedy III wrote on X Tuesday night.

Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy Sr., who was assassinated in 1968 during his run for president, had a stroke while asleep Oct. 3 and has been hospitalized since then, her grandson said in the message.

Her brother-in-law, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in 1963.

Kennedy is the oldest living member of the Kennedy family. After her husband’s assassination, she founded the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights.

She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then-President Barack Obama in 2014 for her work promoting social justice.
