Toto Wolff was “embarrassed” by the Mercedes car in Bahrain ahead of the 2023 F1 season.
The Silver Arrows had just underwhelmed on the track for a second successive season, with Red Bull dominating the sport.
In a new book penned by Matt Whyman called Inside Mercedes F1, the incident is recalled.
During a pre-season debriefing session, Lewis Hamilton’s race engineer Pete Bonnington said: “It wasn’t long ago that we were kings of winter testing. It feels like we’ve slipped.”
And Wolff exclaimed: “This is just not good enough. We need to feel a certain degree of embarrassment here. We blame the problem not the person but, nevertheless, come on.”
