Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will be hoping to spring into life at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, with Mercedes still trying to unlock their true potential. The Silver Arrows struggled for pace in the first two races of the season and remain behind Red Bull and Ferrari in the pecking order as things stand.
It was a particularly sobering day for Mercedes on Friday, with Hamilton finishing 18th at the end of FP2 after struggling on long runs as well as one-lap pace. The 38-year-old went on to offer a grim assessment of his chances in Australia, insisting that it was the worst he had felt in the car for a while.
“We had one of the worst sessions I probably had for a long time,” said Hamilton. “It just got worse and worse. We made some big changes and it was tough. After that session, I feel the least confident I’ve ever felt with this car but there are positives from that that [first practice] run that we did.”
