You don’t need to be an eagle-eyed F1 fan to spot something different about the McLarens at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. Out has gone the papaya and black livery for a yellow, green and blue colour scheme.
It isn’t a permanent switch as the team will be back in its traditional colours for next month’s Canadian Grand Prix. The change is a one-off tribute to one of the sport’s greatest-ever drivers – the legendary Ayrton Senna, whose helmet carried those colours.
The tribute coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Brazilian’s death following a crash at Imola on May 1, 1994. Senna is McLaren’s most successful driver, winning all three of his world titles with the team in 1988, 1990 and 1991.
