‘Extra stubborn’ shower head limescale soaks off in 30 minutes with 1 item – not vinegar

Limescale is typically the number one cause of low water pressure in your shower head.

If your shower head is clogged with years of limescale build-up, then it’s time for a thorough clean.

However, there’s no need to reach for the harsh chemicals though as they could damage your shower head.

Whilst white vinegar is a common go-to for many, there is an alternative natural solution that doesn’t have the nasty odour and perhaps is stronger.

Taking to their Instagram page @peacewiththewild, the team shared their “favourite” way of descaling shower heads that are covered in “extra stubborn limescale” – and that’s to use citric acid.

For this cleaning hack, start by removing your shower head and placing it in a bowl of one-quarter cup of citric acid with some just boiled water and leave to soak for 30 minutes.

Once the time is up, simply wipe the shower head down and all the limescale will have gone.

Make sure to rinse the shower head under plenty of clear water and let enough water run through it to flush out the acid from the inside.

After the shower head was taken out of the solution it was completely limescale-free and gleaming.

Bathroom experts at Villeroy&Boch also prefer using citric acid over white vinegar. They said: “Cleaning with baking powder or with vinegar is very gentle on the material, but is somewhat time-consuming.

“A quicker way is to use citric acid, which can be found in powder form at all chemists.”

Citric acid is corrosive so you should make sure to either protect your hands with gloves or wash the rest of the cleaning agent off with water immediately afterwards to avoid skin irritation.

Due to its potency, you should also first perform a spot test on an inconspicuous area to check it does not damage the material.

If it does cause damage to that small area of the shower head, go with white vinegar to descale it.
