Ex-con accused of stabbing victim near NYPD headquarters smiled after the attack: prosecutors

The ex-con who is accused of stabbing a 19-year-old man steps from NYPD headquarters smiled after knifing his victim, prosecutors said.

Marvin Dupree, 41, was arraigned on charges of attempted murder and assault Thursday night in Manhattan Criminal Court. Assistant District Attorney Danielle Bluth said the stabbing was captured on video and the attack had been completely unprovoked.

Dupree is said to have approached Alan Ryvkin outside Summons Court on Centre St. near Reade St. shortly before noon on Wednesday and without a word, stabbed him in the back below the neck. Ryvkin was at the court to answer a summons for a traffic violation.

According to a criminal complaint, Ryvkin told police “when he turned around to face [Dupree] he saw the man holding a knife and smiling.”

Bluth added that the victim fell to the ground after being stabbed, and hospital staff had said the victim was fortunate that the wound just missed vital spots that would have resulted in much more serious injuries.

Ryvkin, who lives in Brooklyn, told NBC 4 New York he escaped the attack with just eight stitches but that he might have been killed if the wound was a few inches in another direction.

Cops said after assaulting Ryvkin, Dupree fled west on Reade St. He was caught by cops later in the day.

Dupree is no stranger to criminal court, said prosecutors, calling him a predicate felon in Nevada with five felony convictions, 3 misdemeanor convictions, failures to appear in court and two parole revocations.

Bluth asked for $250,000 cash bail, which was granted by the judge.

Summons Court is inside the Municipal Building, about 500 feet from 1 Police Plaza.

Dupree is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 22.
