Everyone in the UK is being ordered to buy key items from Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s or Morrisons now.
The government is urging Britons to be prepared and stockpile various items in case of national emergencies, including bottled water.
The new ‘prepare’ website lists several key items that everyone is being urged to stockpile as soon as possible.
The items include a minimum of three litres of bottled water per person per day.
It says ‘10 litres per person per day to be comfortable’, but more may be needed for those feeding babies or who have pets or medical devices.
People should also buy tinned meat, as well as tinned fruit and vegetables (and a tin opener if they don’t have one).
Thirdly, spare batteries are high on the agenda, including for any torches or radios.
Other items advised include a battery or wind-up radio, a battery powered or wind-up torch and a first aid kit including hand sanitiser and wet wipes.
A portable power bank is also being advised.
All of the items can be found in major supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.
The government says this is part of plans to make the UK more prepared.
The prepare site says: “Emergencies happen every day in the UK and across the world. They can be caused by severe weather or other natural hazards, by deliberate actions, or as a result of accidents or infrastructure failure. They can be events that happen quickly and are over in a few hours, or they can develop and continue over the course of several days, months, or sometimes even longer.”
