Europe's largest sand dune that's twice as tall as Leaning Tower of Pisa – 360ft high

On the Atlantic coast of southwestern France, Dune du Pilat is a breathtaking natural wonder.

Rising to an incredible 360 feet, it is Europe’s tallest sand dune, dwarfing even the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, which stands at just 186 feet.

Stretching 1.8 miles in length and 500 meters in width, this towering mass of golden sand sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the vast Landes Forest, creating a stunning contrast of sea, forest and desert-like landscape.

Unlike many natural landmarks that remain fixed in place, the Dune du Pilat is in constant motion.

Due to powerful winds sweeping in from the Atlantic, the dune moves between 1 and 5 meters inland each year, gradually encroaching on the pine forest behind it.

Located just 37 miles from Bordeaux, the Dune du Pilat is easily accessible by car, train, or bus. A staircase is installed during peak season (spring and summer) to help visitors climb to the summit, but those who visit in winter must trek through the soft sand.
