This amazing mountain pass will take road trippers on a journey through incredible landscapes, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is Austria’s most beautiful panoramic road that spans 48 kilometres into the country’s high mountains.
The excursion, which connects Bruck in the state of Salzburg with Heiligenbkut in Carinthia, is named after the Grossglockner – Austria’s highest mountain with a peak of 3,798 metres.
Drivers can embark on the mesmerising journey, taking in the country’s beautiful landscape between the start of May and November. The road is closed in the winter months due to it being impassable because of the snow.
A toll is charged to take a trip on Austria’s renowned road, with prices varying depending on the vehicle and plans of visitors.
There are different ticket options for the trip, including a day-one, a three-week one, a season ticket, a round-trip ticket and a tour ticket for motorcyclists.
A day ticket for a passenger car of up to eight people costs €43 (£35.81), and for a motorcycle, it is €33 (£27.48).
Season tickets are valid from May to the winter closing at the start of November, and cost €121 (£100.93) for both cars and motorcycles.
Although the road itself is exciting enough, it offers so much more than just the drive. The mountain pass has twelve stations which visitors can explore.
Offering both indoor and outdoor activities, the 12 sites vary from educational nature trails to museums with one-of-a-kind exhibitions. There are also play areas, making it the perfect family-friendly trip.
Kaiser-Franz-Josef Hohne is both the highest and finishing point of the road, where visitors get an extraordinary view of the entire road.
It also has a visitor centre with a wide range of exhibitions, including Austria’s highest automobile exhibition, the special exhibition ‘Berg die – women on the rise’.
