Europe's abandoned town that was once a huge fortress but is now in 'total ruin'

Europe is full of abandoned settlements that offer tantalising glimpses into the continent’s magical past.

Roaming the ruins allows visitors to reconnect with Europe’s rich and complex history.

One such place is the abandoned medieval town-fortress of Cherven in Bulgaria.

Located about 30 kilometres south of Ruse within the national park of Rusenski Los, it is easy to access by car and makes a great day out.

The town was the successor of a Byzantine fortress from the VI century, that flourished in the XIV century.

The medieval settlement included an inner-city citadel on a high rocky plateau, an outer city and unfortified suburbs.

Archaeological excavations in the area have uncovered not only a castle and fortress walls, but also two underground water supply passages, 16 churches, public and administrative buildings, as well as many homes.

A treasure trove of coins, jewellery, handicraft tools, and armaments has also been unearthed and displayed in various museums.

A walk through the medieval ruins can be combined with a sightseeing tour of the beautiful natural landmarks in the park.

Travellers should leave enough time to visit Ivanovo’s rock-hewn churches, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and Basarbovo Monastery, the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria.

These stunning attractions are nearby and are worth the extra effort to explore.

Cherven is a big hit with visitors, receiving some top-rate reviews on Tripadvisor.

Dellinex from Sofia wrote: “Extraordinary place with breathtaking panorama views.

“The fortress is really fascinating and its well preserved. The battle tower is iconic.

“The whole location has been used in the popular TV series ‘Game of Thrones’.

“I loved every part of the place and it’s perfect for families and large groups.”
