But it is now set to deliver an exciting new way for supporters to consume football.
ESPN plans to launch a direct-to-consumer streaming service, dubbed “Flagship”, allowing viewers to watch their channels on devices via the internet.
Reports claim it could cost around $20 a month for subscribers.
And it had initially been scheduled to arrive in time for the start of the new football season in fall.
Question marks had started to emerge over the timeline, with the NFL Draft taking place later this month,
But ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro has now confirmed that “Flagship” remains on course for its target launch.
Pitaro said: “Yes, we’re on schedule to launch this fall.
“I think it’s helpful to think about it in two ways. First off, we will be making all of our channels, all of our content, available director-to-consumer for the first time.
“And that includes ESPN+. So ESPN1, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPN+. Fans will be able to buy it all through ESPN directly.
“Part two is a significantly enhanced ESPN app. So we are now launching a new app, we are very happy with the current app and all the personalization features, that’s the foundation.
“But we’re building off of that foundation and we’ll launch with enhancements like more fantasy integration, more betting integration, more commerce integration, stats integration.”
ESPN’s new streaming service comes after it partnered with the NFL Network for the upcoming Draft.
College players will join new teams later this month in another epic show.
But it means now that ESPN and NFL Network staff will enjoy a stunning crossover in a move sure to delight fans.
