End of Corbyn? Why an early General Election would rip apart the Labour Party

0

The Labour leader called an urgent meeting with the leaders of other political parties while Prime Minister Boris Johnson was holding talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel today. Mr Corbyn wanted to discuss “all tactics available to prevent no deal”. His letter said: “The country is heading into a constitutional and political storm, so it is vital that we meet urgently, before Parliament returns.

“The chaos and dislocation of Boris Johnson’s no deal Brexit is real and threatening, as the Government’s leaked Operation Yellowhammer dossier makes crystal clear.

“That’s why we must do everything we can to stop it.”

The letter was addressed to SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford, Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson, Commons Plaid Cymru leader Liz Saville Roberts, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and Change UK leader Anna Soubry.

Remain-backing Tory MPs Guto Bebb, Dominic Grieve, Sir Oliver Letwin and Caroline Spelman are also copied in, as is former Conservative minister Nick Boles, who resigned the whip in opposition to the Government’s approach to Brexit.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday August 27 at 12pm.

Mr Corbyn also wrote to senior opposition politicians last week and outlined proposals to call a vote of no confidence in the Government in the autumn.

Under the proposals, Mr Corbyn would lead a temporary government which would extend Article 50 and call a general election.

But Brexit Party MEP Rupert Lowe MEP says an early general election would just emphasis how the party wants to cancel Brexit because “they didn’t like what the people said”.

He told Express.co.uk: “Corbyn plans to stuff the Commons full of pro-EU Labour Party apparatchiks who will stop at nothing to thwart Brexit.

“We’re stuck with a paralysed Parliament, a toothless opposition and a fragile Government.

“In 2016 millions of people felt like their voices were finally heard.

“Now the establishment wants to take that away because they didn’t like what the people said.

“A further delay will disenfranchise vast swathes of the population from voting and the damage will be irreparable.”

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson hinted Mr Corbyn would fail to get MPs’ support for his plans.

She added she would not support him becoming caretaker Prime Minister.

The Lib Dems’ Brexit spokesman, Tom Brake, said Mr Corbyn should not be “prescriptive” when it comes to stopping a no-deal exit.

He said: ”It is clear Jeremy Corbyn cannot command a majority in the House.

“He must do the right thing and confirm that if he cannot, he will support someone who can.”

But Mr Corbyn is not backing down and said the Tories have “lurched to the hard right under Boris Johnson”, before calling him “Britain’s Trump”.

He said: ”A general election triggered by the Tory Brexit crisis will be a crossroads for our country. It will be a once-in-a-generation chance for a real change of direction, potentially on the scale of 1945.

“And if there is a general election this autumn, Labour would commit to holding a public vote, to give voters the final say, with credible options for both sides, including the option to remain.”

Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly said Mr Corbyn offered more “dither and delay”.

He said: ”This is a cynical attempt to seize power by a man who would wreck the economy, is soft on crime and won’t stand up for Britain.

“Only Boris Johnson and the Conservatives can provide the leadership Britain needs and deliver Brexit by 31 October, whatever happens.”

Mr Johnson is travelling to France and Germany to meet EU leaders this week.

He told Ms Merkel that Britain wants to do a Brexit deal but the “undemocratic” Irish border backstop must be axed in full to prevent a no-deal exit.

Ms Merkel responded Britain would have to put forward proposals to ensure that the Irish border problem is solved ahead of October 31.

She added Germany was keen to “shape the future relationship in a way that would address this point”,

She said: “In a way this is an expression of a problem we have not yet solved, once we have seen and say this could be a possible arrangement the backstop as a place holder is not needed.”
