Emma Raducanu has spoken out for the first time since withdrawing from the French Open qualifying, hinting that her focus is solely on Wimbledon as she prepares for the grass-court season. The Brit opted against attempting to reach the first round at Roland Garros, having pulled out on Sunday.
The 2021 US Open champion did not automatically qualify for the second Grand Slam of the year due to her lowly 212 world ranking, having spent the majority of last season out through injury after surgeries on both of her wrists and an ankle.
She stood third on the list of alternatives and had a chance of getting through in Paris without qualifying, if there were three withdrawals, but has decided against being involved with the Major, with qualifying set to get underway on Monday.
A statement from Raducanu read: “It’s important for me to keep laying on the foundations and I will use the time to do a healthy block before the grass and subsequent hard court seasons to give myself a chance to keep fit for the rest of the year.”
