Elephant on the loose after escaping circus in Montana: video

An elephant got loose on Tuesday in Butte, Montana after escaping a traveling circus.

The animal left the Jordan World Circus, which was set up at the Butte Civic Center, and was seen wandering around the town.

A driver recorded video of the unnamed elephant crossing through traffic on a busy street and into a parking lot as a man gives chase.

While it’s unclear how long the elephant was loose, it was reportedly caught by its circus handlers and safely corralled, according to NBC Montana.

“Viewers say before the elephant was captured it did number two on a Butte lawn,” the station reported.

Bill Melvin, the manager of the Butte Civic Center, told KXLF the handlers were washing the female elephant outside when she got spooked by a backfiring vehicle and took off.

According to the Performing Animal Welfare Society, Tuesday’s incident marked the second time an elephant has escaped from a Jordan World Circus setting.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
