An elderly couple have been left furious after a gardener charged them £200 for what they believe is a ‘shoddy job’.
Jean Patrick, 82, and husband Terry, 85, wanted artificial grass and wooden fencing installed in the back garden of their home in Glyncoch, Pontypridd.A gardener called Mr Lovell put a leaflet through their door offering his services so they got in touch for a quote, reports Wales Online .
He visited the home and offered to do the job for £220, with the materials for the job having already been purchased by Mr and Mrs Patrick.
Mr Lovell said he spent five-and-a-half-hours doing the work, that the couple were happy with his work and that he warned them “it wasn’t going to look pretty because of the materials they had.”
But the couple claim it only took him two hours and that he did a “terrible job”.
Mrs Patrick said: “On Wednesday he came round at 11am and we had all the materials like a membrane, wooden hedges and cheap grass, it’s not an expensive one because it’s for the bird.
“The next minute he was cutting the membrane and when the grass was down I thought ‘crikey that doesn’t look very nice’. I came down with my daughter Karen and we were disgusted with the job.”
Mrs Patrick said he asked Mr Lovell to take it back up and start the job again, which he agreed to do, but when he had laid the grass a second time she said the job was just as bad.
But when it came to payment, he said he would be willing to take £200 which was paid, but Mrs Patrick claims he had only been at the property two hours.
She said: “He was paid £100 an hour and it was a terrible job and he didn’t bring any of the materials or any equipment.
“My garden is not posh in anyway, I am interested in wildlife like hedgehogs, squirrels and birds and that’s all I wanted. I didn’t want it to look picturesque but I wanted it neat and tidy and this is what I got for £200.”
The couple have now been in touch with Trading Standards and have asked them to investigate.
Mrs Patrick’s daughter Karen Jenkins, 61, said: “We were angry and my mum was really upset about it, she was gutted and she’s not been right the last couple of days.”
In response to Mrs Patrick and Mrs Jenkins’ claims, gardener John Lovell said: “I got there at 9.30am and left at 2pm so I don’t know where they got two hours from.
“They were happy when I was there and they signed the receipt to say they were happy with the work. The pictures they have put up on Facebook is not how I left it.
“I told them it wasn’t going to look pretty because of the materials they had and I asked to take the hedging apart to make it the right size but they refused. I said I wouldn’t do it if I was them but they said they didn’t care how it looked, they wanted an easy option so they could clean it for the birds.”
