Eight easy ways to lift stubborn carpet stains with cheap ‘household items’

Nic Shacklock, an expert at Online-Bedrooms, said: “Carpet stains can be an absolute nightmare to clean especially if they’ve been sitting there unnoticed for weeks.

“These stains can be lifted with some common household items meaning you won’t have to spend a fortune having to get the entire floor deep cleaned.

“Washing up liquid is a great solution to getting rid of mud marks and baking soda can remove any lingering odours.”

1. Shaving foam

Shaving foam is a great item which can “easily” remove grease stains, pen marks as well as juice spillages.

The expert said it can also be used to remove smudged makeup stains on the carpet.

Simply spray the stain with shaving foam, let it sit for half an hour and then blot the area with a clean cloth.

2. Baking soda

Nic explained: “Sprinkling baking soda can help lift older stains which have submerged themselves into the carpet.

“Sprinkle the substance over the stain and vacuum afterwards. It will also remove any foul-smelling odours.”

3. White vinegar

Similarly to baking soda, white vinegar is an effective tool in getting rid of spillages around the home, including pen marks.

Simply douse the stain in white vinegar and scrub over it with the abrasive side of a sponge.

4. Washing up liquid

A simple mix of washing up liquid and warm water can help lift “deeper stains” according to the expert, lifting them to the surface.

He added: “It’s also a great way to get rid of any mud which has been pressed into the ground.”

5. Salt

Nic continued: “A cup of 27p salt will help to absorb any fresh spillages such as coffee or wine without having to scrub on the floor for ages.

“Leave it to soak up the liquid and wipe it down afterwards with a warm cloth.”

6. Baby powder

Similar to baking soda, baking powder also has the ability to lift stains by soaking it up.

Sprinkle the powder around the carpet and vacuum it afterwards for a fresh-smelling scent.

7. Lemons

A lemon can be a “super cleaner” in removing juice stains off the carpet.

Slice the lemon in half and scrub it directly on the stain and it’ll also leave a nice scent in the room.

8. Shampoo

Nic explained: “Apply shampoo onto a sponge and gently rub it into the stain on the carpet.

“Avoid using too much shampoo as it may cause discolouration in the material.”
