Eid al-Adha, an Islamic festival, sees Muslims celebrate the willingness shown by the prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Isma’il in the name of Allah

Muslims around the world have been celebrating Eid al-Adha – one of the biggest events in the Islamic calendar.

Also known as the “Festival of the Sacrifice” , the second major Islamic festival of the year commemorates the story of the prophet Ibrahim.

Allah tested Ibrahim’s devotion by ordering him to sacrifice his eldest son, but at the last minute – when he saw that Ibrahim was going to go through with it – he swapped his son for a lamb, sparing his life.

Muslims commemorate this story every year during the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, Dhu al-Hijjah.

There are special Eid al-Adha prayers, Muslims wear their best clothes and there are feasts and gifts given.

Here are some of the best pictures from this year’s festivities.
