It is only a few weeks until June which means the warmer summer weather will be here soon, but unfortunately, that also means wasps and hornets will become more active.
Wasps make their way into homes in the summer in search of food and are usually attracted to crumbs, spills or anything sugary around the kitchen.
These pests can be a pain to deal with but Michelle, a home expert and founder of My Heavenly Recipes has a simple way to kill wasps without using harsh chemicals.
She said: “If you have a wasp problem, try this cheaper method at home! Just grab a spray bottle and mix up the concoction!
“Once you spray it on the wasp with direct contact, it will coat its body and kill it within a minute. They cannot fly anymore! Woo-hoo!”
How to make a homemade DIY wasp killer recipe
You will need:
- An empty spray bottle
- One-part dish soap
- Three parts water
- 60ml of vinegar (optional)
Instructions
All you need to do is put one part of dish soap in a water-filled with water and a few drops of vinegar if you have it.
Give the bottle a good shake and then spray it directly on any wasps that come flying into your home. It should kill them quickly and then you can dispose of them.
Wasps breathe through spiracles, which are small openings on their bodies and when sprayed with dish soap it blocks the spiracles and suffocates them.
Dish soap also breaks down the wasp’s cuticle, which is a waxy layer on their exoskeleton and draws out the moisture, which dehydrates them quickly.
Vinegar can also suffocate wasps due to its acidity and the strong smell can also work as a deterrent as wasps can find the smell overpowering.
However, it does not work as well as dish soap and is best used to enhance your spray.
This homemade solution is a safe, natural and very effective method to kill wasps without having to resort to spraying harsh chemicals around your home or having to spend the warm weather with the windows shut.
