Callum ‘Halfway’ (played by Tony Clay) has taken centre stage in a new love triangle on EastEnders, caught between his love for Whitney (Shona McGarthy) and the lust he feels for bad boy Ben (Max Bowden).
The heir to the Mitchell empire first crossed paths with Callum when the undertaker wanted to buy a van from Ben so Whitney could launch her fashion business.
It soon became clear Ben had sold Callum a dodgy motor when the police pulled the undertaker over after noticing the vehicle he was driving was stolen.
Confronting Ben over the sale was the first time Callum and Ben’s spark emerged and after the pair finally gave into their chemistry on the BBC soap last week, the young gangster has gone on to blackmail his forbidden lover.
Callum has tried to deny his list for Ben by proposing to Whitney earlier this week in an attempt to get the Walford bad boy off his case.
Although he’s tried to get Callum to admit his true feelings about his sexuality, Ben played another card on Tuesday night by telling the undertaker he needed his help.
With the police investigating Ben’s dodgy deals, the young gangster demanded Callum give the police a description of the men who sold the troublemaker the motors, even though the undertaker has no idea what the men look like.
Ben told the undertaker: “Callum, you’re so good at lying. I think you’re getting better and better which is why I wanted you to lie with that skill. Unless you don’t want to lie anymore. In which case I can help you to tell the truth.”
After Ben told the undertaker he would get off his case if he went through with the lie, Callum agreed to the deal, unbeknownst to fiancée Whitney.
Tonight’s episode will see Whitney ask her husband-to-be to accompany her to a job interview to try and secure a pitch on the market whereby she can sell her creations.
However, at the same time as the interview, Callum is supposed to be at an interview with the police to give them a false version of events to get Ben off his case.
Will Callum tell Whitney the real reason he can’t go with her as he’s embroiled in Ben’s dodgy deals, knowing full well his fiancée would be livid she’s devoted to a crook?
If Callum were to reveal his secret about lying to the police, Whitney could go about confronting Ben to leave her husband-to-be out his scams, but could this lead the troublemaker to expose his affair with the undertaker?
Having admitted to Callum she was happy to finally have found someone who’s not pretending to be someone their not, will the lies leave Whitney heartbroken, leading her to call off her relationship with the undertaker?
Elsewhere in the Square, Ben could find himself knocked off the top spot as the villain of the Square as newcomer Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) could be hiding a menacing secret of his own.
Gray arrived in Walford earlier this year as the hot shot lawyer husband of Karen Taylor’s (Lorraine Stanley) eldest daughter, Chantelle Atkins (Jessica Plummer).
With Chantelle taking centre stage in a feud with Kim Fox-Hubbard (Tameka Empson) since her arrival, Gray has been quietly sitting in the background, with viewers not knowing too much about the newcomer.
After the lawyer confronted hard man Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) recently, this could have been a tease Gray is hiding a dark side to his placid nature.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk at the British Soap Awards, actor Toby Alexander Smith said of his character’s frosty relationship with his father-in-law Mitch Baker and hinting at Gray’s backstory (Roger Griffiths): “He’s also aware his father was never there and he’s obviously spoiling his wife.”
Could Gray’s issues with his own father see him show a darker side of his character to Mitch if he continues being hostile to the lawyer?
EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
