Dust tends to be a bigger problem in wintertime since we are spending more time indoors with shut windows because of the chilly weather, which leads to poorly ventilated homes.
Keeping your home clean of dust is incredibly important as these particles contain allergens like pollen, mould spurs and dust mites which can cause health issues if left to build up.
Not to mention, having a dusty home will it incredibly unhygienic and cause it to become smelly as dust traps odours.
However, you do not have to spend ages waving a duster around, as Mary Hunt, a cleaning expert and founder of Everyday Cheapskate, has a homemade spray that will easily banish dust from your home.
Mary said: “Say goodbye to dust and hello to gleaming wood surfaces with our DIY Dusting Spray recipe! Made with simple ingredients like vinegar and olive oil, it’s safer, cheaper, and more effective than store-bought alternatives.”
How to make a homemade dust remover
You will need:
- 240ml of water
- 60ml of white distilled vinegar
- Two teaspoons of olive oil
- 10 to 15 drops of lemon essential oil (optional)
Why does it work?
White vinegar is one of the best cleaners to use on surfaces as it is naturally antibacterial, so will break down any dust that clings to surfaces as well as sanitise them.
However, what makes vinegar fantastic is that it neutralises static electricity on surfaces so it can prevent dust from gathering in that area.
Olive oil acts as a natural polish and will leave a protective layer on a surface which makes it more difficult for dust to stick to it.
Essential oils simply help make your home smell wonderful but be cautious cleaning with essential oils and do your own research on them as they can be highly toxic to pets.
Method
All you need to do is add the water, white distilled vinegar, olive oil and lemon essential oils (optional) to an empty spray bottle.
Once the ingredients are in the bottle, attach the spray nozzle and give it a shake so everything is blended together.
It is better to use a dark amber glass spray bottle if you wish to store this solution as both olive oil and essential oils are sensitive to light, which means sunlight exposure will cause it to lose its effectiveness over time.
Next, simply spray this dust solution on a surface, and take care not to overspray and give the bottle and shake after each use.
After spraying, quickly wipe a surface with a clean and dry cloth and this simple spray will help your home from becoming clogged up with dust.
Mary said: “Remember, the key is to spray on and wipe off—don’t let the spray sit on the surface. And because oil and water tend to separate, give the bottle a shake before each use to ensure optimal performance.”
