A popular New Jersey boarding facility is thanking first responders for helping to rescue 46 dogs from smoke inhalation.
The potentially frightening incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when smoke from a neighboring retailer infiltrated the K9 Luxury Resorts Pet Hotel in Fairfield, N.J., roughly 30 miles west of midtown Manhattan.
According to pet hotel operators, the facility’s management sprung into action when a monitoring system detected a problem that merited an emergency evacuation.
“Police were already on site and were beginning the evacuations, after which K9 staff transported the guests to a safe location off-site, where they were examined by a local veterinarian out of an abundance of caution,” K9 Luxury Resorts Pet Hotel said on Facebook. “K9 Resorts is thankful for the quick action of the police officers, firefighters, humane society team members, municipal employees, and veterinarians who came together and joined the K9 Resorts team to keep our guests safe.”
All pets were accounted for and healthy, according to the pet hotel group.
K9 Luxury Resorts Pet Hotel says most of its facilities are not staffed overnight, but claims “state-of-the-art” video surveillance and alarm systems keep the dogs they board safe. The company operates 18 pet hotels in and around the tri-state area and about as many throughout the country.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. ABC News said authorities suspect the smoke came from a neighboring convenience store and smoke shop. An eatery and a tattoo shop reportedly encountered smoke damage, too.
