‘Done deal’ – San Francisco 49ers tight end in shock move to NFL division rivals

NFL star Eric Saubert has found a new home in the NFC West.

The tight end, 30, spent the 2024 season with the San Francisco 49ers.

Saubert provided backup to starting TE George Kittle at Levi’s Stadium.

The 30-year-old featured in all 17 regular season NFL games, starting three times.

He gathered in 11 receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown – his first since 2022.

Saubert left the franchise at the end of the season and has since been sat in free agency.

The former fifth round pick has now been picked up by the Seattle Seahawks.

He joined a crowded tight end room in Seattle, despite Pharaoh Brown recently leaving to join the Miami Dolphins.

Saubert was used heavily on special teams by the 49ers and is expected to slot in behind Noah Fant and AJ Barner in the depth chart.

Brady Russell provides the remaining tight end option for coach Mike Macdonald.

“Losing a solid TE to a rival while they’re still hunting for Kittle’s backup,” questioned one fan on X.

“He’s definitely a great backup. The 49ers should’ve re-signed him,” said another.

“So glad he won’t be playing in red and gold anymore was one of the worst signings last season. He played 20% of snaps and got a flag on 10% of those,” countered a third.

Saubert, a seven-year veteran of the league, has played in a host of teams since being drafted out of Drake by the Atlanta Falcons in 2017.

He has spent time with the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans.

Primarily a blocking tight end, he has 47 catches for 389 yards and 3 touchdowns over his NFL career.

Following a disappointing seasons, 49ers star Kittle claimed he wanted to wear the red and gold for the rest of his career.

The 31-year-old tight end is regarded among the league’s elite at the position.

But he is entering the final year of a five-season, $75million deal penned in 2020.

“My goal is to wear the red and gold my entire career,” Kittle told ESPN in January.

Last year, Kittle eclipsed 1,000-yards receiving for the fourth time in his career and reeled in 8 touchdowns.
