Fred Trump III, the son of former president Donald Trump’s late older brother Fred Trump Jr., says he will be voting for his “atomic crazy” uncle’s opponent Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election.
The Republican presidential nominee’s nephew acknowledged the complexity of families and relationships in an interview with ABC News as he promoted his book, “All in the Family: The Trumps and How We Got This Way.” But Uncle Donald takes that to another level, he said.
“Every family has their crazy uncle,” Fred Trump told correspondent Aaron Katersky. “My Uncle Donald is atomic crazy. And he has put his mark on the family history.”
Having known Trump his whole life, his nephew has seen many sides of his uncle, who has been both a benefactor to his developmentally disabled son, and done some “really horrific things” to Fred Trump himself.
Nonetheless, family is family, the younger Trump said, and “I’ve always had a good relationship.”
As such, the book is not a political condemnation but rather a presentation of the unvarnished truth about his uncle, he said.
For example, Fred related the time when Donald Trump told his nephew, whose grown son William has severe developmental disabilities, that disabled people are too expensive to care for and should “just die.”
Fred Trump III also says when he was 10 he distinctly remembers his uncle screaming a racial epithet in casting suspicion on whomever had keyed his sparkling white Cadillac.
While Fred Trump II doesn’t believe his uncle is racist, he says, “Whoever can help him, he will use them. And, you know, call it racist or not, I don’t believe in that.”
He adds: “He uses them as props. When he gets what he needs out of them, he’ll cast them aside.”
Trump’s campaign communications director Steven Cheung called Fred Trump’s recollections “completely fabricated and total fake news of the highest order,” in a statement to ABC News.
