Donald Trump has warned Iran that he would blow the country “to smithereens” as he urges Joe Biden to respond following alleged death threats.
US officials haven’t said whether the threats against Trump’s life are new or previously reported threats.
During an event in North Carolina, Trump said: “If I were the president, I would inform the threatening country, in this case, Iran, that if you do anything to harm this person, we are going to blow your largest cities and the country itself to smithereens.
“You can’t do that. And there would be no more threats. There would be no more threats.”
In his speech, Trump linked Iran to his recent assassination attempts saying: “They may or may not involve, or possibly do, Iran.”
“Around the world, our enemies are desperate to prevent Donald Trump from returning to the White House because they know I will make America great again. They don’t want that.”
Authorities have, however, made no connection between the two assassination attempts and Iran.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Trump’s campaign communications director Steven Cheung said: “President Trump was briefed earlier today by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilise and sow chaos in the United States.”
Following the statement, the 45th US President took to X to threaten the Islamic theocracy.
He warned: “Big threats on my life by Iran. The entire US military is watching and waiting.”
The former US president went on: “Moves were already made by Iran that didn’t work out, but they will try again. Not a good situation for anyone.
“I am surrounded by more men, guns, and weapons than I have ever seen before. Thank you to Congress for unanimously approving far more money TO Secret Service – Zero ‘NO’ Votes, strictly bipartisan.
“Nice to see Republicans and Democrats get together on something. An attack on a former President is a death wish for the attacker!”
