An expert dog trainer on social media has named three breeds first-time owners should never get.
Taking to TikTok, the star warned why you should avoid these dogs at all costs. From overbreeding to behavioural issues, those who lack experience will surely struggle with these breeds.
The creator, who goes by the name of SouthendDogTraining, gives out the best dog advice for varying lifestyles. Helping those who may be considering becoming canine parents, he shared with his millions of followers: “There are three dog breeds we see that I do not recommend for first-time dog owners.
3. German Shepherd
Known for their loyalty, intelligence, and athleticism, this popular dog may come as a surprise being on the list.
However, the expert warns that due to over-breeding, the German Shepherd suffers from “dog-reactivity and anxiety-based issues”, making them a difficult breed for first-time owners to handle.
The dog trainer shared: “The German Shepherd is a noble, loyal, smart, intelligent dog. However, they are massively overbred, and every other German Shepherd we see at the minute has dog reactivity and anxiety-based issues.
“This is because it’s the third most intelligent breed of dog, and people getting them as a first-time dog often don’t know what they are doing. As a result, the German Shepherd can develop issues very fast.”
Dog reactivity is when they overreact to a situation or trigger in an intense way which can include barking, lunging, growling, or baring teeth.
2. French Bulldog
The French Bulldogs, also known as Frenchies, are known for their unique appearance and friendly nature. However, the training expert warns of the breed’s secret aggressive side.
He said: “Bulldogs, by nature, are great with people and great with children. However, they are prone to animal aggression, and we see this a lot within the French Bulldogs.
“A lot of French Bulldogs we see again are massively overbred, so we see lots that need operations to help them breathe. They can become possessive very fast because they kind of become a pampered, desirable little pooch. Without knowing what proper socialising is, the French Bulldog head stong very fast and becomes problematic.”
1. Cocker Spaniel
Cocker Spaniels are known to be smart dogs who love to please, so they can be easy to train, yet the social media dog trainer warns against them for first-time owners.
The expert explained: “Super intelligent, super smart, super switched on, but if you don’t know how to manage a dog with such a strong work ethic or such a strong intelligence, it’s going to go around stealing things it shouldn’t and very quickly develop resource guarding.”
To conclude, the creator reiterated: “This is why these three breeds, although great, I don’t recommend for first-time owners.”
