A doctor has shared a “super simple” method to quit vaping following the government’s announcement of an upcoming ban on single-use disposable vapes.
This week, it was confirmed that the sale of single-use disposable vapes will be prohibited in England and Wales from June next year. Scotland was set to ban them in April next year, but postponed the plan to align with England and Wales.
This gives those dependent on disposable vapes approximately seven months to wean themselves off nicotine. Fortunately for them, a doctor has explained exactly how he helps his patients kick the habit. And there’s a handy supplement people can take as well.
Dr Daniel Amen, an American celebrity psychiatrist and brain disorder specialist, shared his advice with his 2.9million TikTok followers.
He said: “If you’re vaping and you want to stop […] Just start noticing how often you’re doing it, like count! And if you want a soft withdrawal, just decrease it by like 5% every day. It can be super simple.”
Additionally, Dr Amen mentioned a supplement known to reduce the cravings of various addictions – N-Acetyl Cysteine. He suggests a dose of 1,200mg twice daily, and noted: “Many of my patients find that helpful.”
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a supplement version of the amino acid cysteine, available for purchase in health stores and online. The body transforms NAC into l-cysteine, also found in protein-rich foods.
Medical News Today states that side effects of NAC may include fatigue, eye irritation, nausea, skin rash, vomiting and diarrhoea. You should consult your GP before starting any supplements.
The Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) stated that vape usage in England surged by more than 400% between 2012 and 2023. The government’s prohibition on single-use disposable vapes is designed to safeguard children’s health and prevent environmental harm.
