Disney reaches deal with Fla. Gov. DeSantis, makes way for $17B park expansion

Disney reached an agreement with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday that is set to put their prolonged legal battle behind them and make way for a $17 billion expansion plan for Walt Disney World.

The latest development makes room for a fifth theme park and three smaller parks in the Orlando area, as well as nearly 14,000 additional hotel rooms, with the big investment spread over the next two decades.

DeSantis appointees on the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, which overseas Disney World, approved the deal on Wednesday night.

The decision was then swiftly followed by Disney’s request for a federal appellate court to dismiss its lawsuit against the governor.

It marks the end of a roughly two-year legal battle initiated by DeSantis’ takeover of the district following Disney’s opposition to a 2022 law banning early grade lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The law, championed by the Republican governor, was frequently highlighted in his speeches during his 2024 GOP presidential nomination campaign, which he suspended earlier this year.

“This agreement is a big win for central Florida and will lead to numerous jobs and improved guest experiences,” stated Bryan Griffin, communications director for the governor’s office.

Walt Disney World Resort President Jeff Vahle echoed the sentiment, saying that the approval “paves the way for us to invest billions of dollars in Walt Disney World Resort, supporting the growth of this global destination, fueling the Florida economy, and allowing us to deliver even more memorable and extraordinary experiences for our guests.”

As part of the deal, Disney also agreed to donate up to 100 acres for infrastructure projects controlled by the district and is required to contribute at least $10 million for affordable housing in central Florida.
