Disgraced fashion mogul Peter Nygard was sentenced to 11 years in a Canadian prison for sexual assault.
Nygard, 83, was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault in November after a number of women accused him of misconduct that occurred between the late 1980s and 2005.
Nygard, who testified during the 2023 trial, did not speak during Monday’s sentencing when given the opportunity.
In a Toronto courtroom, Justice Robert Goldstein called Nygard a “sexual predator” who showed no empathy for his victims, who were all attacked in offices at Nygard International after he lured them there under false pretenses, including tours and job interviews. Each interaction ended in a private luxury bedroom with locks Nygard controlled, trapping the victims.
All five women, who ranged in age from 16 to 28 when they were assaulted, said their meetings with Nygard ended with sexual activity they did not consent to.
Nygard will receive credit for time served and spend seven years behind bars, though he’ll be eligible for parole in two years.
Nygard faces other criminal charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering, in Montreal, Winnipeg and the U.S. He has denied those allegations.
The Finland-born fashion exec stepped down as chairman of the company after his offices in New York City were raided by the FBI in February 2020. The company has since filed for bankruptcy and entered into receivership.
