Detectives release images of suspect wanted in Bronx killing

NYPD detectives have put out images of a suspect wanted for questioning in last month’s killing of a Bronx man recently released from prison, officials said Friday.

The suspect, seen sporting a black ski cap and a black hooded sweatshirt in the photos, is considered a person of interest in the death of Alvin Ortiz, who was gunned down while sitting in a car outside a Bronx apartment building on Sept. 29.

Ortiz, 33, was repeatedly shot while he sat in a black Hyundai parked on Morris Ave. near Kingsbridge Road at about 1 a.m., police said.

He had just been paroled from prison in February after spending six years behind bars on a weapon possession conviction, officials said.

“My family’s not doing too good right now,” Ortiz’s sister, who didn’t give her name, told the Daily News after his death, describing her sibling as “no trouble.”

“He’s from here. He doesn’t have problems with nobody,” she added. She said Ortiz was a father and had a job working for NYCHA.

Ortiz and another man were sitting in the parked car when two men in a black Acura pulled up beside them and fired five shots, striking both Ortiz and the other man, police said. Cops recovered four 9mm shell casings from the scene, police said.

Medics transported both men to St. Barnabas Hospital, but Ortiz couldn’t be saved, police said. The man he was with suffered minor injuries and is expected to survive.

Ortiz had a lengthy criminal record, with 30 prior arrests, six of which were for gun possession, a police source told The News. The man he was with is also on parole with an extensive criminal record.

Cops did not disclose a motive for the shooting. No arrests have been made.

The killing comes as police celebrate a 17% drop in murders in the Bronx for the year to date. As of Oct. 6, the borough had seen 88 homicides, 19 fewer than the 107 reported as of the same date last year.

Shootings, however, remain a cause for concern. The Bronx has seen 265 shootings so far this year, four more than at this time last year, police said.

Cops scouring the area recovered surveillance footage of the suspect. They released the images to the public in the hope someone recognizes him.

Anyone with information regarding this man’s identity and whereabouts is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
