A decorator jammed a one-inch nail into his own face while investigating why his gun wasn’t working.
The decorator, 53-year-old Mr Sun, with his friend when the nail gun failed on him.
Mr Sun then looked into the nail gun to see what was wrong and to change the nails inside it, when he suddenly heard a “boom”.
A nail measuring three centimetres, 1.2 inches, in length shot out of the gun and into his left cheek.
Mr Sun was in severe pain following the injury so his colleagues took him to hospital following the incident in Harbin, the capital of the Heilongjiang Province in north-east China , .
He told reporters: “It’s terrible every time when I recall the moment. I feel like I’ve been born again after dying.”
Doctor Lu Zhiyong said: “When Mr Sun arrived at the hospital, it was two in the morning, and the left side of his face was with obvious swelling and there was an open wound of about 6 centimetres (2.3 inches) in his left cheek.”
The decorator had shot the nail deep into his cheek so removing it did not come without risks seeing as nerves or arteries could have been damaged.
Given the pain Mr Sun was in, the doctors did not have much choice but to carry out the operation to remove the nail.
The surgery lasted for two and a half hours and, despite potential dangers, was successful.
Doctor Zhiyong added: “The surgery was very successful as our doctors expected. Sun can go home after three days.
“This is the fifth case we have ever seen. Sun is lucky, as the first and second patients who were shot by a nail gun died before surgery.”
