The insanely popular BBC One television series Death in Paradise is gearing up to return next year with a brand new instalment. But there is going to be a huge change to the show as DI Jack Mooney sets to exit.
The police officer was transferred from London to the island of Saint-Marie in the Caribbean to help solve crimes.
Jack (played by Ardal O’Hanlon) has been on screens since series six as the main character, but for the latest addition of the gripping drama, he is going to exit mid-way through.
It comes as the BBC has announced actor Ardal will be leaving his character Jack behind.
After three years of leading the squad in solving the idyllic Island’s murder mysteries, Ardal has made the decision to depart the sunny shores of Guadeloupe to explore other opportunities.

Ardal said: “I’ve spent the last four summers in Guadeloupe playing DI Jack Mooney (solving over 20 murder cases in my time there!)
“It’s been a hugely rewarding and unforgettable experience, working with incredibly talented actors, directors and crew while discovering a magical part of the world.
“However, it’s time to move on and explore other opportunities – preferably nearer the Arctic Circle.
“I’m confident that Death in Paradise will go from strength to strength and viewers will share my enthusiasm for Jack’s successor!”
“We couldn’t be more grateful for his time as our lead detective and his story isn’t over yet – viewers will have to see how, why and when Jack Mooney leaves, but I don’t think there will be a dry eye in the house.”
Tommy Bulfin, Commissioning Editor, BBC Drama added: “Everyone at the BBC would like thank Ardal for his time on Death in Paradise but it’s not the end just yet; as one door closes another one opens, and we are very excited about what’s to come in the next chapter.”
Whoever takes over from Ardal as the new detective inspector will be in the drama for the foreseeable future.
It comes as series 10 of Death in Paradise has already been commissioned for BBC One by Charlotte Moore, Director of Content, and Piers Wenger, Controller of Drama Commissioning.
There is much speculation as to who is going to step into Ardal’s shoes as the new DI.
Perhaps an old face could make a return?
Kris Marshall played the Detective Inspector before Ardal, so there is always the possibility he come make a comeback.
Or maybe the original DI will make an appearance as Ben Miller takes on the role of Richard Poole once more.
Danny John-Jules has always been popular with viewers, maybe his character Officer Dwayne Myers will get a promotion?
