Your first mission in the Crater Lake region sees you taking on an undead bear infected with the Freaker virus. While you may have come across bears in the forests of the Cascade Wilderness before, The Rager is much tougher than the average bear. The Rager is roughly the same size as an uninfected bear, but it’s much more aggressive. Its rotting body is wrapped in barbed wire, no doubt from chasing its targets through fences (and goodness knows what else), showing the creature’s determination to kill its prey.

A Grizzly End: How to kill the Rager in battle?

As the fight starts the bear will rear up on its hind legs and roar. Whilst it wastes time bellowing out a battle cry, throw a Molotov cocktail at it to deal some initial fire and burn damage.

As there is initially some distance between Deacon and the bear, take advantage of this and use your most powerful gun to fire off multiple headshots while The Rager charges at you. Headshots deal more damage than body shots, so bear that in mind (pun very much intended) for the rest of the fight.

Be careful with your timings as the bear charges. You really don’t want to get caught by its claws as its physical attacks deal huge amounts of damage.

The idea is that you dodge before the bear reaches you but, if you are caught, you’ll be faced with a quick time event in which you’ll need to desperately mash the button shown on the screen to escape the bear’s grasp.

During this fight it’s a good idea to use the same tactics you used when fighting the Breaker (you can read our full guide here) and dodge to the bear’s left and right, buying yourself some time to fire whilst the bear turns back around to face you. Don’t get greedy though, always leave yourself enough time and space to dodge and then run away and be mindful of the fact that you are more agile if not more powerful than The Rager.

When you do create significant distance between you and the bear, it’s likely to charge again. Depending on its position in the battle arena you can utilise the flammable barrel by the small shed adjacent to the house. Simply shoot the barrel as the bear runs by it to deal major damage.

If the bear is too far from the barrel, the best strategy is to pair Molotov cocktails with rapid-fire machine gun shots. Make sure you aim for the bear’s head and keep dodging, firing, running and gunning until The Rager falls.

Don’t forget! Daily Star Gaming also has you covered for Days Gone Historical Marker locations in each of the game’s regions, as well as boss guides, survival tips and more!
